(Fin Tube)

Low Fin

(Fin Tube)

Fin Tube: Engineering Reference for Finned Tubing

A Fin Tube is a tube with external fins, grooves or an enhanced surface that increases effective heat-transfer area. Finned tubing is used in air-cooled heat exchangers, condensers, economizers, boilers, heaters and process equipment.

Engineering summary: Fin Tube is a geometric and performance family, not a single material standard. Selection must consider fin type, fin-to-base-tube attachment, metal temperature, corrosion, vibration, fouling, cleanability, differential thermal expansion and the equipment standard.

What is a Fin Tube?

A plain tube provides approximately the cylindrical inside or outside area for heat transfer. A finned or enhanced tube adds effective surface area, allowing greater heat duty within a shorter length or smaller equipment envelope.

Surface enhancement is especially valuable when one side has a much lower film coefficient than the other, such as process fluid inside a tube and air outside it.

Integral fins and Low Fin tubes

An integral fin is formed from the tube material by cold working, so there is no separate fin-to-tube interface. Low Fin tubing typically has short, closely spaced fins and is used in shell-and-tube exchangers, condensers and evaporators.

Technical specification note: unfinned-end dimensions, fin profile, wall under the fins, root-diameter tolerance and post-fin testing must be separately defined.

Fin Tubes in air-cooled heat exchangers

In an air-cooled heat exchanger, process fluid normally flows inside the tube while air flows over the fins. Because the air-side coefficient is lower, external fins increase the effective air-side area.

Fin Tube FAQ

Is a Fin Tube the same as a Condenser Tube?

No. Fin Tube describes an enhanced surface; Condenser Tube describes condenser service. One tube may be both.

Do more fins always improve heat transfer?

No. More fins can increase pressure drop, fouling and cleaning difficulty, reducing actual performance.

Is an aluminum fin on a steel tube suitable?

It is common, but temperature, moisture, galvanic corrosion, attachment and design life must be checked.

What is the difference between Low Fin and High Fin?

Low Fin has short dense fins and is common in shell-and-tube equipment; High Fin is common on the air or gas side of air coolers.

Which parameters define a finned-tube technical specification?

Fin type, tube and fin materials, base dimensions, fin height and pitch, finned length, Bare Ends, operating temperature and tests must be defined.
