Materials and Grades Guide for Steel Pipe and Tube
Material family, specification and grade map Updated: 2026

Carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel are material families; Grade B, Grade 6, P22, P91, T22 and TP316 are grades defined inside product specifications. Engineering selection must align material family, product specification and grade with the actual service.

Concept separation

Material, specification and grade are not interchangeable

A broad steel family is not a complete product definition. A technical definition combines the product specification, grade, product form, manufacturing route, dimensions, delivery condition and applicable testing requirements.

Material familyIdentifies a broad class such as carbon, low-alloy or stainless steel.
Product specificationDefines product form, manufacture, dimensional scope, testing and delivery conditions.
GradeSets the chemistry, properties and grade-specific requirements inside that specification.
Service and design basisTemperature, pressure, fluid, corrosion, welding and code rules constrain final selection.
Material selection

Distinguish metallurgical groups from service-based classifications

Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel and Stainless Steel are three principal metallurgical groups used for industrial pipe and tube selection. Chrome-Moly Steel is a subgroup of alloy steels. By contrast, high-temperature and low-temperature steel describe service-based selection categories rather than separate chemical families.

Selection sequence

From service conditions to a material specification

Material selection starts with service conditions, but steel family is only one part of the technical definition. Product form, product specification, grade, delivery condition and testing should be identified separately and read together.

Service conditionsPressure, design temperature, fluid, corrosion, thermal cycling and expected life define the service basis.
Product formPipe, tube, seamless, welded and special product forms can be governed by different product specifications.
Steel family and product specificationA family name alone is insufficient; the product specification must match the product form, manufacturing route and intended technical service.
Grade, delivery condition and testsHeat treatment, impact testing, nondestructive testing (NDT) and other product tests are separate parts of the technical definition.
Key questions

Frequently asked questions

Is alloy steel the same as chrome-moly steel?

Chrome-moly is an important alloy-steel family, but not every alloy steel is a chrome-moly steel.

Is a grade designation sufficient without its product specification?

No. The grade designation must be evaluated together with the product specification, edition, product form and delivery condition.

Does choosing stainless steel automatically solve corrosion?

No. Fluid chemistry, chlorides, temperature, stress, fabrication, welding and the operating environment still govern suitability.
