(Heat Treatment)

Heat Treatment of Steel Pipe & Tube: Normalizing, Annealing and Tempering

Heat treatment — linking thermal cycles, delivery condition and final properties Updated: 2026

Heat treatment of steel combines controlled heating, holding and cooling to establish a required microstructure or delivery condition. Normalizing, annealing, and quenching followed by tempering are distinct thermal cycles; their temperatures, times and cooling routes depend on the steel, initial product condition, dimensions and applicable product specification.

Key rule: there is no universal normalizing or annealing temperature for all steels. Austenitizing temperature, hold time, cooling medium and subsequent treatment are grade-, product-, thickness- and specification-dependent.

Main steel heat-treatment processes

Fundamentals

What does heat treatment change?

The thermal cycle can alter phases, grain size, carbide distribution, residual stress, hardness, strength and ductility. The starting condition matters as well: hot-finished pipe, cold-drawn tube and Cr-Mo alloy steel do not necessarily respond to the same cycle in the same way.

HoldingTime at target temperatureAllows the specified transformation or temperature equalisation

AnnealingSoften, restore ductility or develop a specified structure; the annealing type must be identifiedDepends on the annealing process; there is no single universal cooling ruleIncludes +I in EN 10216-2

Solution AnnealingDissolve soluble phases/precipitates in austenitic stainless steel and retain the intended structure by rapid coolingRapid cooling as required by the product specificationProduct-specification route; not equivalent to +I

Annealing” is a family of heat-treatment cycles. Isothermal annealing (+I) in EN 10216-2 is a different concept from solution annealing of austenitic stainless steel.

Real specification example

P235GH as a clear +N example

EN 10216-2:2024 Table 1 lists P235GH / 1.0345 in the +N condition, with an austenitizing range of 880 °C to 940 °C and air cooling. This is grade-specific specification data, not a generic “normalizing temperature for carbon steel.”

Alloy grades in the same table use other conditions such as +NT and +QT, which is why grade designation alone does not fully define the delivered material condition.

Delivery condition

Do not confuse: product heat treatment is not the same as post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). PWHT applies to the welded joint under fabrication/code requirements; +N, +NT, +QT and +I describe the material delivery condition.

Frequently asked questions

Are normalizing and annealing the same process?

No. Both are heat treatments, but their thermal cycle, cooling route and purpose can differ. The steel grade and product specification determine which condition applies.

What does +N mean on an MTC?

In EN 10216-2, +N denotes normalizing. The applicable temperature range must be read from the row for the specific grade.

Is product heat treatment the same as PWHT?

No. Product heat treatment establishes the delivered material condition; PWHT is performed after welding under fabrication and welding-code requirements.
