Eddy Current Testing of Pipe and Tube

Surface sensitivity, frequency, fill factor and end effect Updated: 2026

Eddy Current Testing (ET) uses electromagnetic induction and responds to electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, geometry and discontinuities. It is widely used for rapid surface and near-surface examination of conductive tubing; ferromagnetic steel may require magnetic saturation to reduce permeability noise. ASTM E309 does not establish universal acceptance criteria, so reference standard, sensitivity and end effect must be documented.

Electromagnetic principle and ET setup variables

In Eddy Current Testing (ET), alternating current in a coil creates a changing magnetic field that induces circulating electrical currents in a conductive material. The distribution of these eddy currents depends on electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, frequency and component geometry. The secondary magnetic field produced by the eddy currents changes coil impedance, and the instrument analyzes variations in the amplitude and phase of that response. A discontinuity can disturb current flow, but lift-off, fill factor, wall-thickness change, geometry, surface condition and changes in electromagnetic material properties can also generate signals; ET therefore does not directly measure “flaw size.”

Frequency affects skin effect and effective penetration while also changing phase response and signal-to-noise ratio. Coil or probe configuration and fill factor influence electromagnetic coupling and the region of sensitivity. Test speed has to remain compatible with sampling and data-acquisition rate so that short spatial responses are not lost. In ferromagnetic materials, permeability variation can dominate the response, and some techniques use magnetic saturation to stabilize that variable. The final setup is therefore an electromagnetic measurement configuration designed to separate the target response from geometry- and material-related noise.

The reference standard anchors setup and evaluation

Notches, holes or reference areas must match the technique and target discontinuity in material, dimension, orientation and depth. Frequency, phase, gain, speed and probe are established against that reference and recorded.

ET response to discontinuities and variables

An ET indication is not automatically the true flaw size. An ET signal must be interpreted against the reference, setup and target discontinuity.

Examination coverage and the role of a reference standard

Actual ET coverage is governed by coil or probe geometry and arrangement, scan path, test speed, component dimensions and discontinuity orientation. Near tube ends or abrupt geometric transitions, the electromagnetic field can change because of end effect, so the evaluable region can differ from the central portion of the tube. Electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability and surface condition also change sensitivity. Coverage therefore means the region that the electromagnetic field and data-acquisition system have actually interrogated at the established sensitivity, not merely the length that passed through the equipment.

A reference standard or reference tube provides a controlled response for standardizing the setup, establishing sensitivity and monitoring system stability. Material electromagnetic response, outside diameter and wall thickness, and the geometry and location of artificial reference discontinuities should be relevant to the technique and examination objective so that amplitude and phase responses are comparable. The reference is neither a complete model of a service flaw nor an acceptance criterion by itself; required notch, hole or reflector dimensions and mandatory configurations must come from the governing test method or standard. Periodic reference checks can reveal setup drift or changes in system performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What physical principle does eddy current testing use?

An alternating coil field induces eddy currents in a conductive material, and changes in the electromagnetic system response are analysed.

What variables change an ET signal?

Electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, geometry, frequency, coil or probe arrangement, test speed, and discontinuity type and orientation affect the signal.

What is the role of a reference standard or tube in ET?

The reference provides a known response for setting sensitivity and checking system response; interpretation still depends on the method and examination conditions.
