برای نمونه: NPS 1/2 → OD 21.34 mm، NPS 2 → 60.32 mm، NPS 12 → 323.8 mm، NPS 14 → 355.6 mm و NPS 24 → 609.6 mm.

Nominal Pipe Sizing: NPS, NB and DN

Pipe size designations without confusing them with actual diameter

Nominal pipe size is a designation used to coordinate pipe, flanges and fittings. NPS, NB and DN must be kept separate from actual outside and inside diameters.

Core definition

What is nominal pipe size and why is it not a measured diameter?

A nominal pipe size is a designation for identifying a pipe dimensional family. In the American system, NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) is the more formal designation. NB (Nominal Bore) is older commercial terminology often used for the same nominal-size reference; “bore” in NB does not mean the actual inside diameter. DN is the metric nominal designation.

Nominal Pipe Size (NPS)

Common ASME sizing designation; the NPS number alone is not actual OD or ID.

Nominal Bore (NB)

Legacy/commercial terminology; controlled technical documents should make the corresponding NPS or DN explicit.

Nominal Diameter (DN)

Metric nominal designation for coordinating piping components; it is also not a measured diameter.

Actual dimensions

OD comes from the dimensional table; ID depends on OD and wall thickness.

Direct ASME B36.10-2022 rule: for NPS 12 (DN 300) and smaller, the NPS number is not the actual outside diameter and the OD is numerically larger than the nominal size. At NPS 14 (DN 350) and above, OD in inches is numerically equal to NPS. Selected examples are NPS 1/2 → OD 21.34 mm, NPS 2 → 60.32 mm, NPS 12 → 323.8 mm, NPS 14 → 355.6 mm and NPS 24 → 609.6 mm. See the ASME B36.10-2022 dimensional reference.

Inch-based system

How are NPS and NB used in inch-based pipe sizing?

In American piping standards, NPS is the formal nominal-size designation. NB is an older term that is still encountered in some technical references. A complete dimensional statement should identify NPS or DN, wall or Schedule, and the dimensional standard explicitly.

Common ambiguity: “4 inch NB” identifies only a nominal size; it does not define Schedule or nominal wall, dimensional standard, product specification or grade.
Key point

Why NPS 4 or 4 inch NB does not mean an actual 4-inch diameter

NPS 4 pipe has a standardized OD of 114.30 mm, about 4.5 in. The “4” is a nominal size name used to coordinate piping components, not a direct OD or ID measurement.

NPS 4 SCH 40 and NPS 4 SCH 80 may both be called “4 inch NB”, yet their approximate IDs are about 102.26 mm and 97.18 mm respectively.

Complete dimensional definition

Technical parameters needed to define pipe size

A nominal-size phrase such as “4 inch NB” is incomplete as a dimensional definition. A complete description identifies nominal size, wall thickness or Schedule, the dimensional reference, and the product specification and grade where product identity is also being defined.

Nominal sizeNPS or DN identifies nominal size and remains distinct from actual diameter.
WallSchedule and exact nominal wall thickness are related but distinct dimensional descriptors.
Dimensional and product referencesThe product specification/grade and a dimensional reference such as ASME B36.10M serve different technical roles.
Product condition and testsManufacturing route, heat treatment and product tests are defined by the applicable product specification and related technical requirements.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Are NB and NPS the same?

They often refer to the same nominal-size family in market usage, but NPS is the more formal and less ambiguous ASME designation.

Is NB the actual inside diameter?

No. ID changes with wall thickness and must be calculated or measured from actual dimensions.

Is NPS the same as pipe OD?

No. NPS is nominal; actual OD comes from the dimensional standard.

How are NPS 4 and DN 100 related?

They are corresponding nominal designations for the same size family; neither means an actual OD of exactly 4 in or 100 mm.

Should a technical specification use NB or NPS?

Controlled technical documents use explicit NPS or DN together with schedule/WT, dimensional standard, product specification and grade.
