Steel Pipe and Tube Testing

Separating product conformance tests, NDT and pressure tests Updated: 2026

Pipe and tube testing covers different aspects of a product: chemical composition, mechanical behavior, dimensions, pressure-boundary integrity and detectable discontinuities. Each method has its own measurement principle and interpretation limits. This page acts as a hub and links directly to the dedicated technical pages available on the site.

Main pipe and tube testing methods

Test families and their outputs

The table separates major test families by the quantity or response they report. Applicability remains product- and specification-dependent; a chemical, mechanical, dimensional, pressure/leak or NDT result should not be interpreted as evidence for a property that the method does not measure.

Sampling is different from 100 percent examination

Sampling and full-extent examination are different concepts. In a sample-based test, one or more specimens are selected on a defined basis such as heat, lot or batch, and the result can only be generalized within that stated basis. Examinations performed on each length, continuously, or over a defined surface or volume instead describe an examination extent or coverage. “Number of specimens” and “test frequency” describe how samples are selected; “examination extent” or “coverage” describes how much of the product is actually interrogated by the method. These concepts should not be collapsed into one generic sampling term.

Lot, heat and each-length testing

A test program should distinguish specimen count, test frequency, heat/lot/batch basis and examination extent. The exact quantity or interval for a product comes from the governing product specification and test method; a single specimen count or test interval cannot be generalized across all products.

Test-result documentation and traceability

Test documentation should state what was examined, by which method and under what conditions. Product or specimen identity, the examination location, technical reference, test conditions, equipment and calibration or performance-verification status where relevant, and the result with units should remain traceable. Sampling basis and examination coverage are separate concepts. If a result is compared with a limit or evaluation criterion, the reference for that comparison should also be identified.

Product identityHeat, lot or pipe identifier where applicable; links the result to the examined item.
Technical reference and editionStandard, code or technical method used for the examination and its referenced edition.
Method and equipmentExamination method, equipment identifier and probe where applicable; records the test configuration.
Calibration and performance verificationCalibration reference, calibration or performance-check status and sensitivity where relevant.
Result and evaluationRecorded value or indication, unit, examination location and evaluation result, with follow-up where needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of this page in pipe and tube testing?

This page provides the overall testing map and links to the dedicated pages for available methods, including NDT, UT, ET, MT, hydrostatic testing and PMI.

How does sample count differ from examination coverage?

Sample count states how many specimens were selected and tested; coverage states what portion of the product was actually examined by the method.

What information is needed to interpret a test result?

The test method, specimen or examination-area identity, relevant test conditions, result and unit, and the applicable technical reference should be identifiable.
