(Code)

(Dimensional Standard)

(Component Standard)

(Material Specification)

(Qualification Rules)

(Design Basis)

ASME codes and standards for pipe and piping

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): codes and standards for piping Updated: 2026

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was founded in 1880. In addition to its professional engineering role, ASME publishes major safety and design codes and standards, including the BPVC, the B31 piping codes and B36 pipe-dimensional standards.

Name and history

How did ASME develop from the industrial age into safety codes?

ASME was founded in 1880 by engineers and industrialists including Henry R. Worthington, Alexander Lyman Holley and John Edson Sweet. Early priorities included standardizing machines, parts and work practices to improve safety, reliability and industrial efficiency.

ASME issued its first steam-boiler test standard in 1884 and a pipe-dimension/thread standard in 1887. Following severe boiler explosions in the early twentieth century, the first Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code edition was issued in 1914 and published in 1915. This history explains why ASME today covers design and safety rules, not just product specifications.

B36 history

Evolution of pipe dimensions to ASME B36.10-2022

The B36 history shows that NPS, schedule designations and nominal pipe mass developed through decades of dimensional standardization rather than appearing as isolated commercial numbers.

1927–1928ASA authorized a sectional committee for standardizing wrought steel and wrought iron pipe dimensions and materials, with the first committee meeting held in May 1928.
1935–1939The first issue appeared as a tentative American Standard and became an American Standard in 1939.
1978–1996SI dimensions and a kg/m plain-end mass equation were added; the 1996 edition identified metric pipe with the dimensionless DN designator.
2018Table 2-1 was expanded for selected small sizes with additional Schedule 160 and XXS entries.
2022SI rounding rules, calculated mass listings and selected nominal walls from NPS 8 through NPS 28 were revised. See the dedicated ASME B36.10-2022 reference page.
Document types

Code, standard and specification are not interchangeable

Design code

Provides the system safety framework for design, materials, fabrication, erection, examination and testing; examples are ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3.

Dimensional standard

Creates a common dimensional language, such as ASME B36.10M for wrought steel pipe and ASME B36.19M for stainless steel pipe.

Component standard

Defines product requirements for flanges, fittings and valves; the ASME B16 family is the common example.

Material specification

Defines grade, chemistry, mechanical properties, heat treatment and product tests. BPVC adopts many ASTM specifications with SA/SB designations.

Qualification rules

Qualify joining procedures and personnel; ASME BPVC Section IX is a common reference for welding and brazing qualifications.

Design chain

From service definition to governing standards and documents

1. System and service scope

Power, process, pipeline, refrigeration, hydrogen or building service; this drives the B31 family selection.

2. Design basis

Design pressure and temperature, fluid, corrosion, cycles, external loads, design life and jurisdiction are recorded.

3. Governing design code

The code controls design equations, allowable stresses, fabrication, examination and testing.

4. Dimensional and component standards

B36 defines pipe dimensions while B16 provides common flange, fitting and valve standards.

5. Material, grade and product documentation

Product specification, grade, schedule/wall, manufacture, heat treatment, NDE, MTC and inspection must be stated.
