Quenching and Tempering

Quenching and Tempering of Steel

Austenitizing, controlled quenching and balancing hardness with toughness Updated: 2026

In quenching and tempering (Q&T), steel is held in a suitable austenitic range, quenched at controlled severity, then tempered to reduce brittleness and residual stress while balancing strength and toughness. There is no universal temperature or hold time: chemistry, section size, geometry, quenchant, equipment and product specification control the cycle. Results should be verified by hardness traverse, mechanical properties and microstructural condition.

Purpose of the Q&T cycle

In Quenching and Tempering, austenitizing establishes the starting condition, quenching develops the required hardness and phases, and tempering reduces stress and brittleness. The target is a strength-toughness balance, not maximum hardness.

Stages of the Q&T cycle

Each stage has its own inputs and acceptance criteria. Cycle parameters must be tied to actual product data and the applicable acceptance requirements.

AustenitizingTemperature / hold time / uniformity; Grain growth or insufficient solution
Transfer to quenchTransfer time; Transformation before quenching
QuenchingMedium / severity / agitation; Cracking, distortion or insufficient hardness
TemperingTemperature / time / number of cycles; Residual brittleness or excessive strength loss
Final coolingRate and medium; Property variation or oxidation

Section size and quench severity matter

The surface and centre of a thick section do not cool at the same rate. Chemistry, diameter and wall, quenchant, temperature and agitation must be considered together to avoid insufficient hardness, distortion or cracking.

Effects of process variables

The outcome of quenching and tempering depends on the complete thermal history and on heat transfer through the section. Austenitizing temperature and time influence austenite uniformity, dissolution of soluble phases or carbides, and grain development, with the appropriate response depending on steel chemistry and prior microstructure. During quenching, hardenability, section thickness and geometry, and heat-extraction severity govern surface-to-centre cooling rates and the resulting distribution of transformation products and hardness. Quenchant temperature and agitation affect heat transfer, while severe thermal gradients can increase residual stress, distortion and cracking risk. During tempering, temperature and time control recovery and tempering reactions that reduce hardness and strength to varying degrees, relieve residual stress and develop toughness. The metallurgical response therefore has to be understood across the section rather than from a single recorded temperature.

The heat-treatment label does not prove acceptance

The label “quenched and tempered” identifies a broad processing sequence but does not by itself define the final metallurgical condition. Two components carrying the same treatment label can develop different hardness distributions and properties because of differences in chemistry, prior microstructure, section size, austenitizing conditions, cooling rate and tempering cycle. Process evaluation therefore links the thermal history to the material response: hardness profiles can reveal section-to-section uniformity, mechanical tests quantify selected strength and toughness characteristics, and microstructural examination, where technically relevant, can clarify transformation and tempering condition. None of these observations is a substitute for understanding the actual thermal path and component geometry. Process records may be distributed across several technical documents, and a mill test certificate (MTC), where present, is only one traceability link between material identity and test results; it does not by itself establish the metallurgical condition.

Post-treatment verification

Post-treatment evaluation establishes what mechanical and metallurgical condition the thermal cycle produced. Hardness uniformity through the section, tensile and toughness properties where relevant, dimensional change and distortion, surface integrity, and evidence of process-related cracking or other discontinuities each describe a different aspect of the outcome. Where microstructural examination is technically justified, it should be interpreted together with hardness and mechanical-property data. The appropriate examination set depends on the material, product form and governing technical basis; a defensible assessment therefore correlates process history with measured evidence rather than relying on a single indicator.

Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter for cycle comparison

For approximate comparison of tempering cycles for one steel, use P = T(C + log10 t). P is the Hollomon-Jaffe parameter, T absolute tempering temperature in kelvin, t holding time in hours, C a material- and reference-dependent constant, and log10 the base-10 logarithm. Convert Celsius by T(K) = T(degC) + 273.15.

The table shows seven examples of P changing with temperature and time using C = 20. The constant must be verified for the actual material and reference, and equal P alone does not guarantee identical properties or microstructure.
