Positive Material Identification (PMI) for Pipe and Tube

Alloy identity verification - not a substitute for MTC or complete laboratory analysis Updated: 2026

Positive Material Identification (PMI) comprises analytical methods used to identify or verify elemental composition and alloy family for a component. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES) operate on different physical principles and do not have identical elemental capability, surface-preparation needs or limitations; handheld XRF is effective for many heavier alloying elements, whereas carbon and selected light elements generally require a method with different analytical capability such as OES. PMI characterizes material identity through chemistry; it does not replace nondestructive testing (NDT) for crack or discontinuity detection, nor does it constitute a complete assessment of mechanical properties or microstructure. Surface condition, contamination or coating, measurement geometry and instrument verification can influence the result, so the measurement must remain traceable to a defined component and test location, the method used and the verification status of the instrument.

Element-detection ranges of PMI methods

XRF is fast and portable for many alloying elements but generally does not measure carbon. OES can cover carbon and lighter elements more effectively, with greater dependence on surface preparation, argon control and calibration.

Designing a Material Verification Program

A Material Verification Program is a framework for maintaining material identity across a defined population of components and for controlling alloy mix-up. It establishes where material identification is needed, the examination extent or sampling basis, an analytical method suited to the target elements, surface-condition controls, instrument calibration or performance verification, and traceable recording of results. Method selection follows actual elemental capability and the limitations imposed by matrix, surface and geometry. The program is technically useful only when each measurement remains linked to component identity and test location and when method limitations are carried into interpretation.

Program scopeIdentify the alloy systems, component types, process units or lines and project stages covered by PMI.
Examination extentDefine full examination or a sampling rate from mix-up risk, consequence, project requirements and a documented sampling plan.
Test methodSelect XRF, OES or laboratory analysis according to the target elements, method limitations, component type and surface condition.
Acceptance criteriaDefine the expected grade or specification, permitted elemental ranges and decision rule before testing; the instrument's automatic grade match alone is not sufficient.
Nonconformance handlingSegregate and identify nonconforming items pending disposition, and define retesting, affected-item review, NCR recording and final action.

PMI result traceability and documentation

A PMI result is reviewable only when a clear chain connects the component, measurement location, analytical method, instrument and recorded data. Component identity and, where available, production identifiers such as heat or lot, the exact test location, method, instrument model or identifier, calibration or performance-verification status, reported elements and units should allow the result to be assigned to the same item. Surface condition and method limitations should also be identifiable where they affect interpretation.

Technical documentation is more than recording the alloy name suggested by an instrument. Elemental data, instrument warnings or limitations, and relevant information on uncertainty or method capability have to be interpreted together with specimen identity. Linking the measurement to material records, including the mill test certificate (MTC) where one exists, completes the traceability layer; it does not replace the analytical measurement itself.
