بیان فارسی بر اساس معرفی رسمی ASNT؛ متن اصلی: detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. ASNT

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Surface and near-surface flaw inspection | Updated: 2026 Updated: 2026

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a nondestructive examination method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic steels. On seamless steel pipe it can reveal accessible longitudinal or transverse surface cracks and certain near-surface discontinuities on the outside surface or prepared inspection areas. MT is not suitable for deep internal flaws or austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316.

Application to steel pipe

What flaws can MT find in steel pipe?

On ferromagnetic steel pipe, MT sensitivity depends on the location and orientation of the discontinuity and the direction of the magnetic field. Surface cracks, seams and some near-surface discontinuities are detected most effectively when the field is oriented appropriately relative to the discontinuity.

MT is suitable for carbon steel and many low-alloy steels, but it is not appropriate for non-ferromagnetic materials such as common austenitic stainless grades 304 and 316. It also does not replace UT or RT when the inspection target is a deep internal flaw.

Physical principle

How does flux leakage reveal a discontinuity?

“detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials”
ASNT official Magnetic Particle Testing method page. Official source

Magnetic flux prefers to remain in a ferromagnetic part. A discontinuity with different permeability disturbs that path. Near the surface, flux leaves and re-enters the part, forming a leakage field that attracts ferromagnetic particles and creates a visible indication.

Magnetization directionPart surfaceFlux path in partFlux leakage fieldParticle accumulationSurface-breaking crack

Engineering schematic of magnetic flux leakage in MT

A crack normal to the flux path produces a stronger leakage field, attracting particles where flux leaves and re-enters the surface.

Orientation rule: sensitivity is highest when the discontinuity is approximately normal to the field. Two approximately perpendicular magnetizations are normally required for directional coverage.
Applicability

Which materials can be examined by MT?

Carbon and low-alloy steels

Generally suitable, subject to surface access and adequate field generation.

Some cast irons and martensitic steels

Can be examined, but geometry, permeability, roughness and residual field affect technique.

Austenitic stainless steel

Normally non-ferromagnetic and not suitable for MT; PT or another method is considered.

Aluminium, copper and nonferrous alloys

Not suitable for MT; the method must match material, defect type, thickness and access.
