Nondestructive Testing — NDT

Nondestructive Testing for Pipe and Tube

Selecting an NDT method by discontinuity type, material, geometry and product Updated: 2026

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) comprises examination methods used to detect and evaluate discontinuities without destroying the serviceability of the component. Method selection depends on material, geometry, surface condition, thickness, and the type, location and orientation of the expected discontinuity. Each method has its own sensitivity and application range, and results must be interpreted within the method and technical reference used for that examination.

NDT and PMI answer different questions: NDT methods examine discontinuities or material condition by their respective physical principles, while Positive Material Identification (PMI) is used to identify alloy chemistry. Neither method substitutes for the other.
Inspection question

Discontinuity type and examination objective

The phrase “complete NDT” is not technically precise unless the examination method, coverage, sensitivity and calibration reference are defined. The expected discontinuity, its probable location, the material and the geometry provide the basis for selecting the method and examination extent.

Is the indication visible at the surface?VT, PT or MT may be considered according to material and discontinuity type.
Is an internal flaw or wall change expected?UT, RT or electromagnetic methods may be selected by geometry and material.
Is the product thin conductive tubing?ET can suit production or exchanger-tube inspection, but technique and calibration are product-specific.
Is the goal material identity or pressure integrity?PMI and hydrotest answer different questions and do not replace discontinuity examination.
Method application

Applications of the main NDT methods

NDT methods do not have identical sensitivity to every discontinuity. Defect type, location, orientation and product material determine the appropriate method.

Visual Testing (VT)Visible cracks or damage, surface corrosion, end/bevel condition, geometry, markings and other visible anomalies; often the first inspection step.
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)Cracks, seams and discontinuities open to the surface in solid nonporous materials; ferromagnetism is not required.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)Surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic steels, including sensitive surface/end or machined areas.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)Internal discontinuities and thickness measurement; depending on technique and scan direction it can assess longitudinal/transverse flaws, laminations or wall loss.
Eddy Current Testing (ET)Conductive materials and especially heat-exchanger/condenser tubes; an internal probe can indicate wall changes, corrosion, erosion and selected cracking from the electromagnetic response.
Radiographic Testing (RT)Imaging of internal density/volumetric changes, particularly in welds and components with suitable geometry/access; not automatically the first choice for seamless pipe body inspection.

How do hydrostatic testing and PMI differ from flaw-detection NDT?

Hydrostatic testing demonstrates pressure containment and evident leakage under the test conditions, but it does not identify the location and nature of every discontinuity. Positive Material Identification (PMI) verifies alloy identity or elemental composition and is not a substitute for crack or volumetric-flaw detection. Full grade verification may also require mechanical properties, heat treatment and production documentation.

Acceptance rule: method, coverage, sensitivity, reference standard, personnel qualification, acceptance criteria and reporting must be defined in the specification or ITP.
Examination definition

Parameters defining an NDT examination

An examination definition should identify the product and examination zone, expected discontinuity, method, calibration, coverage and the basis used to evaluate and report the result.

product and examination zonePipe body, weld zone, tube end, U-bend or internal surface may require different techniques.
flaw type and orientationLongitudinal, transverse, laminar, wall-loss and surface indications do not produce identical responses.
method, calibration and coverageReference discontinuity, scan rate, examination percentage and sensitivity must be traceable.
Evaluation and reportingRecord the result together with the evaluation reference, examination location, coverage and the information needed for traceability.
Key questions

Frequently asked questions

Is one NDT method enough for every flaw?

No. Flaw type, depth, orientation, material and geometry determine the appropriate method or method combination.

Is eddy current only for stainless tubing?

No. ET applies to conductive materials, but the standard, frequency, probe and magnetic behavior must match the product.

Is performing the test alone sufficient?

No. Personnel qualification, procedure, calibration, coverage, acceptance criteria and reporting are part of the acceptance system.
