(Reduction of Area)

Steel Properties: Strength, Hardness & Toughness

Mechanical properties — from test values to engineering decisions Updated: 2026

Yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, toughness, fatigue and creep describe different aspects of material behaviour. For material and piping decisions, each reported value must be read with its test method, units, specimen condition and acceptance requirement to understand what it proves—and what it does not prove—for the intended service.

Quick reference

What does each property quantify?

Mechanical-property numbers only become meaningful when their definition, test method, unit and reporting condition are known. The relationships below are conceptual reading aids; YS, hardness, Charpy, creep and fracture toughness are obtained from defined tests under specified conditions, not from one universal formula.

ConceptRelation / symbolTypical quantitative formUse and limitation
Engineering stressσ = F / A₀MPaBasis of the tensile curve; not an acceptance limit by itself.
Engineering strainε = ΔL / L₀dimensionless or %Relative extension; depends on specimen geometry and gauge length.
Elastic modulusE = σ / ε in elastic rangeGPaMeasures stiffness, not strength.
Yield strengthYS / Rp0.2 as applicableminimum or measured MPaOnset of permanent deformation by the test definition; not allowable stress.
Tensile strengthTS = Fmax / A₀minimum or range in MPaMaximum engineering tensile stress; not toughness or creep strength.
ElongationA = (Lf − L₀) / L₀ × 100% with gauge lengthDuctility indicator; do not compare without specimen definition.
HardnessHBW / HRB / HRC / HVscale valueLocal material/process control; not a universal TS converter.
Impact energyCharpy V-notchJ at stated temperatureNotched impact response; not identical to fracture toughness or MDMT.
Tensile test

How do yield strength, tensile strength and fracture differ?

A tensile test converts axial load and extension into a stress–strain curve. The initial region is approximately elastic; yielding leads to plastic deformation, engineering stress rises toward UTS, and fracture follows necking. The yield definition must be read from the applicable test method and product specification.

Product-specification example: the site ASTM A106 Grade B page lists minimum YS of 240 MPa and minimum TS of 415 MPa. These are product acceptance values, not design allowable stress.
Ductility

Elongation depends on gauge length and specimen geometry

Elongation is the percentage increase in gauge length after fracture. Reduction of area is a different local ductility measure at fracture. Neither is identical to toughness, and elongation values from different specifications should not be compared without the specimen and gauge-length rules.

Three different values

Test result, specified limit and design allowable stress are different quantities

A single grade can carry three different kinds of values, each answering a different question. ASTM A106 Gr.B provides a useful example.

Rule: a test result above the specified minimum does not change the design allowable stress; the allowable value must be taken from the applicable design code for the same material and temperature.
Impact test

Charpy impact testing does not measure the same thing as tensile strength

A tensile test measures response under steadily applied tensile load. A Charpy V-notch test reports energy absorbed during rapid fracture of a notched specimen at a specified temperature. A Charpy result is incomplete without test temperature, specimen size and orientation.

ExampleValueCorrect interpretation
ASTM A333 Grade 6Impact test temperature = −45 °CASTM A333/A333M-24 lists −45 °C as the base Grade 6 impact-test temperature; this does not by itself establish the system MDMT

Acceptance energy depends on specimen dimensions, orientation and the governing specification/code, so isolated Charpy numbers should not be compared without their test conditions.

Test conditions

A mechanical-property value is incomplete without test conditions

A mechanical-property value is interpretable and comparable only within the method and conditions under which it was measured. In tensile testing, specimen geometry and gauge length affect reported elongation, and specimen orientation relative to the product axis or rolling direction can expose anisotropic material response. In impact testing, test temperature and specimen geometry are part of the definition of the result; hardness likewise depends on the selected method, scale, load and indenter geometry. Heat-treatment or delivery condition establishes the starting microstructure and can materially change the measured properties. Two mechanical values are therefore meaningfully comparable only when the property definition, test method, specimen condition and principal test conditions are compatible.

Hardness

Hardness and its relationship to other mechanical properties

Brinell, Rockwell and Vickers use different indenters, loads and scales. Hardness can be useful for alloy-steel and weld/HAZ process control, but a generic hardness-to-tensile conversion is not valid for every alloy and condition.

Additional properties

Properties required beyond yield and tensile strength

Yield and tensile strength describe only part of steel behavior. Time-dependent service, cyclic loading and brittle-fracture risk require additional properties and data.

FatigueCyclic-loading behavior; do not derive fatigue life from one tensile test.
CreepTime- and temperature-dependent deformation under stress; elevated-temperature design needs its own data basis.
Fracture toughnessParameters such as KIC or JIC address crack-growth resistance under defined conditions and are not Charpy energy.
Test-result interpretation

Conditions needed to interpret mechanical-test results

Mechanical-test results should be read with the product specification, grade, units, test method and specimen conditions. A reported result belongs to a defined test and does not substitute for design calculations or a complete description of material behavior.

Specification and grade contextA property table without product specification, grade and edition lacks context.
units and test methodInterpretation depends on MPa/ksi units, hardness scale, Charpy temperature and specimen orientation.
Comparison with the reference limitCompare the result with the corresponding limit in the product specification for the same product form and test conditions.
A test result is not a design allowable valueAllowable stress, MDMT, fatigue and creep assessment are governed by the applicable design code.
traceabilityHeat number, dimensions, heat treatment and sampled product must trace to the delivered material.
Worked reading example

Example interpretation of a tensile-test result

In an illustrative ASTM A106 Grade B example, yield strength (YS) is 312 MPa and tensile strength (TS) is 471 MPa, while the stated reference limits are 245 MPa and 415 MPa, respectively. The valid conclusion is only that the measured values are above those reference limits; 312 MPa cannot be used directly as design allowable stress.

This is an illustrative example. For an actual product, the test result should be traceable to the relevant specimen or heat and compared with the applicable product specification.
Key questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between YS and TS?

YS relates to the defined onset of plastic deformation; TS is the maximum engineering stress reached in the tensile test. They serve different purposes.

Must an MTC result equal the specified minimum?

No. The specification value is an acceptance threshold; actual test results can be different and usually exceed a minimum requirement.

Can tensile strength be calculated exactly from hardness?

Only approximate correlations are valid for defined materials and ranges. There is no universal exact conversion for every alloy.

Is Charpy impact energy the same as fracture toughness?

No. Charpy measures absorbed impact energy on a notched specimen; fracture toughness uses different parameters and test methods.

Is yield strength the same as allowable stress?

No. Design allowable stress is defined by the governing code for the exact material and temperature and is not simply the yield strength.
