(Schedule)

(Pressure Rating).

NPS 4, XS (WT 8.56 mm), ASME B36.10M

What Is Pipe Schedule?

NPS, outside diameter, wall thickness and common schedule designations Updated: 2026

Pipe schedule is a dimensional wall designation for a specific NPS. SCH 40, SCH 80 and SCH 160, together with the legacy STD, XS and XXS designations, relate NPS and fixed outside diameter to tabulated nominal wall thickness in ASME B36.10M.

Basic definition

Four distinct dimensional concepts

Start by separating nominal pipe size (NPS), outside diameter (OD), wall thickness (WT) and inside diameter (ID). For a given NPS, OD comes from the dimensional table; changing schedule changes wall thickness and therefore ID.

Nominal pipe size (NPS)A standardized size designation that is not necessarily equal to the actual outside diameter.
Outside diameter (OD)The actual external dimension assigned to each NPS by the dimensional standard.
Wall thickness (WT)The nominal wall obtained from the intersection of NPS and schedule.
Inside diameter (ID)Calculated from OD and wall thickness and reduced as the wall becomes thicker.
Origin of the schedule number: the original concept sought an approximately uniform relationship based on 1000 × P/S, but that approach did not align sufficiently with established commercial wall thicknesses. Schedule numbers were therefore adopted as a standardized ordering designation for wall thickness, not as a pressure rating.
Table logic

Nominal massChanges with size and wallIncreases with wallDelivered mass remains subject to tolerances
Geometric relation: nominal inside diameter is calculated as ID = OD − 2 × WT. All inputs must use consistent units.
Dimensional standards

Which table should be used?

The correct dimensional table depends on the product group. B36.10 covers wrought steel pipe and B36.19M covers stainless steel pipe dimensions.

Wall-series definition

What is Schedule 40 and how is its wall thickness determined?

Schedule 40 is one of the most commonly specified wall series for steel pipe, but “40” is neither a wall thickness nor a pressure value. Actual wall changes with NPS and must be read from ASME B36.10M tables.

Core rule:

To convert SCH 40 into millimetres, first identify NPS and then read WT from the corresponding table cell.

Wall-series definition

What is Schedule 80 and how does it differ from Schedule 40?

SCH 80 is a heavier wall series than SCH 40 across many common NPS sizes. The number 80 does not mean 80 mm or a pressure class; actual WT must be taken from the dimensional table for the specific NPS.

To convert SCH 80 into millimetres, first identify NPS and then read WT from the corresponding table cell.

Schedule 160: heavy-wall dimensional series for steel pipe

SCH 160 is a heavy-wall series in ASME B36.10M. It is considered when design requires greater nominal wall, but Schedule 160 alone does not define allowable pressure, material grade or service suitability.

Core rule:

To convert SCH 160 into millimetres, first identify NPS and then read WT from the corresponding table cell.

Traditional designations

What are STD, XS and XXS pipe walls?

STD (Standard), XS (Extra Strong) and XXS (Double Extra Strong) are traditional wall designations still shown in ASME B36.10M tables and older technical documents. They should not be treated as universally equivalent to one schedule number across all NPS sizes.

Key point:

STD and XS match SCH 40 and SCH 80 at several common sizes, but the relationship does not continue across all sizes. XXS is also a separate traditional column, not a universal synonym for SCH 160.

Exact equivalence limits: under ASME B36.10-2022, STD and SCH 40 are identical through NPS 10; above that range STD is 9.53 mm. XS and SCH 80 are identical through NPS 8; above that range XS is 12.70 mm.

Legacy terminology

Use of STD, XS and XXS in dimensional references

STD, XS and XXS are legacy wall-designation terms that remain present in dimensional tables and older technical documents. Their actual nominal wall must be read for the specific NPS from the applicable dimensional standard.

Common mistake

XXS is not the same as SCH 160

Table check required:

At NPS 4, XXS is 17.12 mm while SCH 160 is 13.49 mm. At NPS 8, XXS is 22.22 mm while SCH 160 is 23.01 mm. There is no universal XXS-to-SCH160 equivalence.

Legacy designation

Reading XS and XXS from the dimensional table

For NPS 4 XS, the corresponding nominal wall is read directly from the applicable B36.10 table. Stating the designation together with its nominal wall makes the dimensional definition explicit.

NPS 4, XS (WT 8.56 mm), ASME B36.10M

For XXS, likewise state the actual nominal wall for that NPS.

Correct use

Relationship between Schedule and nominal wall thickness

Schedule identifies a nominal wall series for a given pipe size. NPS and the governing dimensional table are needed to obtain the actual nominal wall thickness.

product specification and materialThe governing product specification and grade are independent of the Schedule designation.
NPS and the governing dimensional tableChoose the appropriate dimensional reference for carbon/alloy or stainless steel pipe.
the corresponding nominal wallThe schedule designation maps to wall thickness, which is then compared with required design wall and manufacturing tolerance.
Relationship between schedule and nominal wallShowing both schedule and nominal wall prevents interpretation differences.
Design warning: schedule is not a pressure class or allowable pressure. Pressure capacity must be calculated using the design code, material properties at design temperature, negative tolerance, corrosion allowance and other applicable factors.
Threading: ASME B36.10-2022 notes that Schedule 5 and Schedule 10 wall thicknesses do not permit threading in accordance with ASME B1.20.1. This is separate from pressure design and must be checked with the intended joint type.
Key questions

Frequently asked questions

Does SCH 40 have the same wall in every size?

No. Schedule is a table designation, and the corresponding wall thickness changes with nominal pipe size.

Does a higher schedule always mean a higher allowable pressure?

A thicker wall can increase pressure capacity, but allowable pressure also depends on material, temperature, tolerance, corrosion allowance and the design code.

Are SCH 40 and SCH 40S always identical?

They should not be assumed identical without checking the governing table. The S suffix belongs to the stainless pipe dimensional standard.

Is STD always the same as SCH 40?

No. They match at several common sizes, but the specific NPS table must be checked.

Is XS always SCH 80?

No. NPS 10 is a clear example: XS is 12.70 mm while SCH 80 is 15.09 mm.

Is XXS the same as SCH 160?

No. XXS is an independent traditional wall designation and may be thicker or thinner than SCH 160 depending on NPS.
