Steel Pipe and Tube Standards Guide
Standards family map Updated: 2026

ASTM, API, ASME, DIN, EN and JIS do not perform the same role: some define products and materials, some organize dimensions or inspection documents, and others govern design and construction. Selecting the governing document therefore begins with the product, system and design requirement.

Document roles

How product, dimensional, design and inspection documents work together

A single designation rarely completes an industrial technical definition. Product specification, dimensional standard, design code and test methods each have their own scope and should be read for the subject they govern.

Product specificationDefines the product form, grade, manufacture, chemistry, mechanical properties and baseline tests.
Dimensional standardOrganizes diameter, wall, schedule, tolerances and mass per unit length.
Design and construction codeGoverns design rules, allowable stress, fabrication, welding, examination and acceptance.
Supplementary technical informationReferenced document and edition, service conditions and any supplementary technical requirements should be stated separately from the primary role of the product specification or design code.
Role of standards

Roles of ASTM, API, ASME, DIN, EN and JIS standards

ASTM, API, ASME, DIN, EN and JIS do not serve the same function. Some define products, others dimensions or design rules, and each should be used within its proper scope.

Standards relationship

Logical sequence for reading related standards

A technical product definition combines product type and service conditions with the product specification, dimensional standard and, where applicable, design code. These documents have different roles and should be read by subject.

Product type and service conditionsPipe or tube type, fluid, pressure, temperature, corrosion and product form define the application.
Product specificationThe product specification and grade define material and product requirements within their stated scope.
Dimensional standard and design codeSize, diameter, wall and design or fabrication rules can originate from separate technical references.
Referenced edition and supplementary requirementsDocument number, edition and any supplementary technical requirement should be linked clearly to the reference that governs it.
Equivalency boundary

Technical comparison before substituting standards or grades

Similar names or applications do not make two standards equivalent. Product scope, manufacturing route, chemistry, mechanical properties, testing, tolerances and delivery condition should be compared in the editions under review.

Technical rule: a commercial name or similar grade designation does not replace direct comparison of the scope and requirements of the two references.

Key questions

Frequently asked questions

Are ASTM, API and EN directly equivalent?

No. Product scope, grade, manufacturing route, properties, testing and the editions being compared must be reviewed directly.

Is a product standard enough for design?

No. A product standard defines the product; system or equipment design also depends on the applicable design code and service data.

Must the latest edition always be used?

The referenced edition must be identified. Moving to another edition requires review of the technical differences and their effect on the intended application.
