JIS Standards for Steel Pipe and Tube
Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) for steel pipe and tube Updated: 2026

Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) are Japan’s national industrial standards developed and maintained under the country’s Industrial Standardization Act. In steel, the letter G identifies the ferrous-material/metallurgy division, which contains many pipe and tube standards.

Name and history

What is JIS and where does it sit in Japan’s standards system?

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards. The modern JIS framework is rooted in Japan’s 1949 Industrial Standardization Act. Standards are established and revised through a formal national process, with the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) playing a central deliberative role.

On 1 July 2019, Japan broadened the scope of its standardization law and changed its Japanese legal terminology, while the international acronym JIS remained in use. JIS development also has a strong policy of harmonization with ISO and IEC standards.

Selection structure

What does a JIS designation identify?

The family letter, document number and grade symbol must be read together. One number does not cover every steel-tube application.

G familyFerrous materials and products, including many steel pipe and tube documents.
Standard numberIdentifies product form and service, such as pressure, elevated temperature or exchanger tubing.
Grade symbolSymbols such as STPG, STS, STPT, STB or STBA identify material families and property levels.
Manufacture and deliverySeamless, ERW, hot finished, cold finished and heat treatment must be verified.

Selecting a JIS standard by application

JIS documents are separated by product type and application. The relevant reference depends on whether the subject is pipe, tube, dimensions or standard comparison.

Technical reference

Technical information accompanying a JIS reference

A JIS product reference should state the full standard, grade, manufacturing route, dimensions, heat treatment, testing and documentation.

Complete standard number and editionThe JIS G xxxx designation and edition year must match the contract documents.
Grade and manufacturing routeGrade symbol, seamless/ERW route and hot- or cold-finished condition define grade and manufacture.
Dimensions and heat treatmentOD, WT, length, tolerances and heat-treatment condition define dimensions and delivery condition.
Testing, inspection and certificationHydro/NDT, mechanical tests, supplementary requirements and deliverables form the verification framework.
Key questions

Frequently asked questions

Is JIS G 3454 the high-pressure pipe standard?

It covers pressure service; the JIS G 3455 family should be reviewed for higher-pressure duty.

Is JIS G 3461 equivalent to ASTM A179 or A192?

Applications may overlap, but scope, grades, properties, dimensions and tests require separate comparison.

Are all JIS pipes seamless?

No. Permitted manufacturing routes depend on the document and grade and form part of the technical product definition.
