Annealing

Annealing Steel: Annealing Types, +I and Pipe & Tube Applications

Annealing — one term covering several different heat-treatment cycles Updated: 2026

Annealing is not one heat treatment with one fixed temperature and cooling route. It is a family of thermal cycles used to soften steel, restore ductility after cold work, reduce stress or establish a specified structure. Technical documents should therefore identify the annealing type whenever the distinction matters.

Important distinction: +I in EN 10216-2 denotes Isothermal Annealing. It is not the same condition as Solution Annealing of austenitic stainless steel.

TreatmentPurpose / conceptPipe-and-tube note
Full AnnealingFor suitable steels, develops a softer, closer-to-equilibrium structure through a controlled heating and cooling cycleThe exact cycle must come from material/process requirements; one universal pipe-and-tube temperature range is not valid.
Process / Recrystallization AnnealingRestores ductility and reduces cold-work effects in formed productsClosely tied to cold-work history and steel composition.
Isothermal AnnealingUses a controlled isothermal stage to develop the intended transformation pathEN 10216-2 identifies +I for specific grades.
Solution AnnealingFor austenitic stainless steels, dissolves soluble phases/precipitates and uses rapid cooling to retain the intended solution-treated conditionNot the same as +I; requirements come from the stainless product specification.

The exact process name matters: “Annealed” alone may not fully define the material condition because full, isothermal and solution annealing follow different routes.

Core distinction

How does annealing differ from normalizing?

Annealing is a family of heat-treatment cycles and may involve slow cooling, isothermal holding or another route depending on the annealing type. Normalizing, by contrast, is a defined cycle involving austenitizing followed by controlled cooling, commonly in air in many product specifications. A direct comparison is therefore valid only when the annealing type is identified; compared with full annealing of the same steel, normalizing generally produces a finer microstructure and higher hardness and strength.

Stainless steel

Solution annealing is a different stainless-steel concept

For austenitic stainless steel, solution annealing establishes the intended solution-treated condition and is associated with rapid cooling after the solution-treatment temperature. ASTM A213 and ASTM A213M-25 requires austenitic tubes to be furnished in the heat-treated condition and provides an allowed route involving rapid cooling after hot forming when the required minimum solution temperature is met.

This must not be confused with +I in EN 10216-2: +I specifically identifies Isothermal Annealing for defined grades, while Solution Annealing belongs to the austenitic stainless product route.

No generic solution-annealing temperature table is shown intentionally: the applicable temperature and cooling requirements must be checked against the exact stainless grade and product specification.
Cold work and ductility

Why can annealing matter after cold work?

Cold drawing and other cold-working routes increase dislocation density, hardness and strength while reducing ductility. Where the manufacturing specification permits or requires it, an annealing or recrystallization cycle can form part of the route used to restore ductility and establish the required structure. The cycle must come from the product specification and manufacturer's controlled process rather than a generic temperature value.

Delivery condition

Heat Treatment Condition + Test ResultsThe delivery condition must be consistent with mechanical test results and heat/lot traceability.
Also separate from PWHT: product annealing is not post-weld heat treatment. PWHT is performed after welding and is governed by fabrication and welding-code requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Does annealing always mean slow furnace cooling?

No. Annealing is a family of treatments. Some use slow cooling, isothermal annealing uses a controlled isothermal route, and stainless solution annealing normally relies on rapid cooling.

What does +I mean in EN 10216-2?

+I denotes Isothermal Annealing in the EN 10216-2 heat-treatment table and applies only to the grades assigned that condition.

Are +I and Solution Annealed the same?

No. +I is an isothermal-annealing delivery condition in EN 10216-2; solution annealing is a different treatment associated with austenitic stainless steels.
