(Normalizing)

Normalizing Steel: Definition, Property Effects and EN 10216-2 Data

Normalizing — from metallurgical concept to pipe-and-tube delivery condition Updated: 2026

Normalizing is a heat treatment in which an applicable steel is heated into the specified temperature range for austenitic transformation, held as required, then removed from that range and cooled by the specified route — commonly in air in many product specifications. The exact temperature and cycle must be taken from the grade and product specification.

Specification example: EN 10216-2:2024 lists P235GH / 1.0345 in the +N condition with an austenitizing range of 880 °C to 940 °C and air cooling.
Technical definition

What happens during normalizing?

Heating into the appropriate range followed by controlled cooling can refine and homogenize structure left by rolling, forming or a previous thermal cycle. Where the product specification requires normalizing, it forms part of the delivered product definition and the specified mechanical properties apply to that condition.

“Normalized” alone does not predict a fixed property set. Carbon and alloy content, section size, austenitizing temperature, hold time and cooling rate all affect the final structure and properties.

Core distinction

How does normalizing differ from annealing?

Normalizing is a defined cycle involving austenitizing followed by controlled cooling, commonly in air in many product specifications. Annealing, by contrast, is a family of heat-treatment cycles and may involve slow cooling, isothermal holding or another route depending on the annealing type. A direct comparison is therefore valid only when the annealing type is identified; compared with full annealing of the same steel, normalizing generally produces a finer microstructure and higher hardness and strength.

This is a process-level comparison; the governing product specification and grade override generic descriptions.

+N versus +NT

Why do some grades require tempering after normalizing?

For certain alloy steels, the product specification assigns the +NT condition. The cycle does not end with normalizing: a separate tempering range is specified. For example, 13CrMo4-5 / 1.7335 is listed with +NT, austenitizing at 900 °C to 960 °C and tempering at 660 °C to 730 °C.

“Normalized” and “normalized and tempered” therefore describe different delivery conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable on an MTC or technical order.

Property response

Why is there no single property change for normalizing?

FactorHow it affects the result
Chemical compositionCarbon and alloy content alter transformation kinetics and hardenability.
Section size / wall thicknessSurface and core cooling rates differ; thickness can affect the permitted treatment route.
Austenitizing temperatureMust stay within the grade-specific range; excessive temperature can promote grain growth.
Prior manufacturing routeHot finishing, cold drawing or prior forming changes the starting microstructure.
Subsequent treatmentFor +NT, tempering is part of the final condition and property control.
Delivery condition

How normalizing is expressed in product specifications

The normalizing condition should be read together with the grade, product specification and delivery condition. The generic word “Normalized” alone does not fully define the product or its delivered condition.

Example: EN 10216-2:2024 — P235GH — +N — TC2 defines the delivery condition more precisely than the generic statement “normalized tube.”

Frequently asked questions

Is normalizing always performed at 880 °C to 940 °C?

No. That range applies to specific EN 10216-2 grades including P235GH. Other grades have different specified ranges.

What is the difference between +N and +NT?

+N denotes normalizing; +NT denotes normalizing followed by tempering.

Is normalizing the same as PWHT?

No. Normalizing can define the product delivery condition, while PWHT is a post-weld operation controlled by fabrication and welding-code requirements.
