(Casing)

(Tubing)

API 5CT Casing and Tubing Reference
Engineering ReferenceMANIK TRADINGUpdated: 2026

API 5CT is the principal oil-and-gas product specification for casing, tubing, couplings and specified well tubular accessories. It is fundamentally different from API 5L line pipe. Selection must be tied to well design, pressure, temperature, produced fluid, corrosive environment and the completion programme.

Scope of API 5CT

Casing supports the wellbore and isolates geological formations to limit unwanted fluid communication between zones and support pressure control. Tubing is installed inside the casing string and provides the primary flow path for production to surface or injection from surface into the well. API 5CT addresses product requirements including material, dimensions, manufacture, heat treatment, testing, inspection, marking and documentation.

Casing

Structural and pressure-containment tubulars used to support the wellbore, isolate formations and enable safe drilling and completion.

Tubing

The inner production or injection string, normally exposed directly to the service fluid and completion conditions.

Current edition and document control

API Specification 5CT is currently in its 11th Edition. API published Addendum 1 in May 2025, and its official update register lists Errata 3 in June 2026. The applicable edition, addenda and errata form part of the technical basis of the specified product.

Technical note: “API 5CT” alone is not a complete purchasing description. Grade, product type, dimensions, nominal mass, length, end finish, connection, heat-treatment condition, additional tests, applicable Supplemental Requirements and inspection level must be stated.
Important 11th-edition change: API Spec 5CT, 11th Edition no longer uses Product Specification Levels (PSLs). API states that former PSL requirements were incorporated into the main specification, converted to Supplemental Requirements (SRs), or deleted. Legacy project documents that still cite a PSL should therefore be reconciled with the 11th-edition requirements.

Changes to PSL Requirements in API 5CT, 11th Edition

The PSL structure was removed in the 11th edition of API 5CT. Depending on the subject, requirements associated with PSL in the 10th edition were incorporated into the main text, moved to Supplemental Requirements, or removed. The table summarizes those changes.

Download table
Grade familyGeneral engineering useSelection caution
H40 / J55 / K55General casing grades for conventional dutiesDepth, design loads, collapse capacity and burst capacity are part of the design basis.
N80Higher-strength casing and tubing applicationsProduct type and heat-treatment condition are verified by the MTC.
L80A family including Type 1 and chromium-bearing optionsSour/corrosive service requires separate project and NACE/ISO evaluation.
C90 / T95Controlled-property grades for selected completion conditionsHardness, mechanical properties and environmental limits are important.
P110 / Q125High-strength gradesEnvironmental cracking, connection performance and inspection rigor are independent technical considerations.

Connections and end finish

Well-string performance depends on both pipe body and threaded connection. API 5CT covers the product, while standardized API thread dimensions and gauging are closely associated with API 5B. Premium connections may use proprietary geometries and must be assessed through the manufacturer’s qualification data and performance envelope.

  • Connection and coupling type must match the technical specification and tally.
  • Drift, bevel, thread compound, protectors and storage conditions require control.
  • Critical operations may require thread inspection and connection gauging before the string is run into the well.

Manufacture and heat treatment

Manufacturing routes vary with product, size, grade and specification requirements. Heat treatment is critical for many grades because it establishes controlled strength, toughness and hardness. Supplier evaluation should include manufacturing route, heat-treatment control, heat/lot traceability and the mill’s applicable API licensing status.

Testing and quality control

The test programme depends on product type, grade, the base specification requirements, applicable Supplemental Requirements and the technical specification. Typical controls include tensile testing, hardness, hydrostatic test, NDT, dimensional inspection, drift, mass/length verification, surface examination and marking review.

Technical definition: The MTC should trace the product to heat and lot and show actual test values. A generic statement of “API 5CT compliant” without traceable data is not sufficient.

API 5CT versus API 5L

API 5L covers line pipe for pipeline transportation, whereas API 5CT covers well casing and tubing. Similar base material or diameter does not make these product specifications interchangeable.

Line-pipe definition is driven primarily by fluid transport and pipeline pressure. Downhole strings must also address axial load, burst and collapse pressure, production environment and connection performance.

API 5CT product-definition and inspection parameters

Casing/tubing product type and exact grade are separate product parameters.
OD, nominal mass/wall, length and range define the dimensional envelope.
End finish, thread, coupling and connection requirements define the connection system.
Edition, addenda/errata and applicable Supplemental Requirements form the governing document set.
Sour service, CO₂, H₂S, high temperature and special pressure duty define distinct service conditions.
NDT, third-party inspection, packing and thread protection form separate verification and delivery parameters.
MTC, API licensing/monogram status and mill traceability form the documentation basis.

Frequently asked questions

Is API 5CT suitable for line pipe?

No. API 5L is normally the principal specification for line pipe; API 5CT is intended for casing and tubing.

Is P110 always better than L80?

No. Higher strength does not guarantee suitability for every environment. Corrosion, H₂S, hardness, toughness and connection design may govern selection.

Is a premium connection the same as an API thread?

Not necessarily. Premium connections may be proprietary and require assessment against the manufacturer’s qualification and performance data.

Summary

API 5CT is a well-tubular product specification. A complete product definition covers grade, dimensions, nominal mass, range, connection, service environment, applicable Supplemental Requirements, testing and documentation. Any substitution with API 5L or another grade requires approval through the well design and completion engineering process.
