(Process Piping)

(Design Pressure)

(Design Temperature)

(Minimum Design Temperature)

(Allowable Stress)

(Corrosion/Erosion Allowance)

(Cycles and Displacement)

Material, Welding and Heat Treatment

(Listed Material)

(Unlisted Material)

WPS/PQR/WPQ

PWHT

(Traceability)

ASME B31.3 Process Piping — Engineering Requirements for Process Piping

From fluid service to leak test Edition checked: 2024

ASME B31.3 provides a common design and construction language for refinery, petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, hydrogen, semiconductor and cryogenic piping. The code defines the system safety framework, while the piping class, datasheet and technical product definition define the actual product.

Official scope

Which plants and fluids are covered?

“covers materials and components, design, fabrication, assembly, erection, examination, inspection, and testing of piping”
ASME B31.3 — 2024 official description
Process plants

Petroleum refining, chemical, pharmaceutical, hydrogen, pulp and paper, semiconductor and related terminals.

Fluids

Raw and finished chemicals, petroleum products, gas, steam, air, water, fluidized solids, refrigerants and cryogenic fluids.

Packaged equipment

Interconnecting piping between stages or pieces of packaged equipment can be within scope.

Equipment boundary

Vessels, exchangers, pumps and compressors have their own product codes; B31.3 controls piping at the defined interface.

Jurisdiction

Local law, owner specifications and inspection requirements may be more stringent than code minimums.

Service classification

Fluid service affects design and examination

Service groupGeneral logicEngineering effect
Normal Fluid ServiceBase case for services not assigned to a special categoryGeneral design, fabrication, examination and test rules
Category DLow-hazard fluid under code-defined limitsSome simplified requirements after all definition criteria are satisfied
Category MVery small leakage can create serious exposureMore stringent material, fabrication, examination and leakage controls
High Pressure Fluid ServiceDesignated by the owner for the high-pressure chapterDedicated component design, fatigue and fabrication rules
High Purity Fluid ServiceSpecial contamination and cleanliness controlService-specific surface, joining, cleaning and fabrication details

Fluid-service designation is an owner/designer responsibility and is not based only on the fluid name.

Design conditions

Pressure, temperature and credible scenarios

Design pressure

Covers credible maximum pressure in each section, including static head, surge and blocked-in scenarios.

Design temperature

Represents component metal temperature; fluid temperature, heat transfer, insulation and ambient conditions are evaluated.

Minimum design temperature

Drives brittle-fracture control, impact testing, materials and welding; it is not simply ambient temperature.

Allowable stress

Selected from code tables for the material, product form, heat treatment and design temperature.

Corrosion and erosion allowance

Based on degradation mechanism and design life; a B36 schedule does not define corrosion allowance.

Cycles and displacement

Cycle count, temperature range, nozzle movement and settlement affect stress range and fatigue screening.

Effect of 12.5% negative tolerance3.91 / 0.875≈ 4.47 mmMinimum nominal wall for this example
Comparison with ASME B36.10MNPS 6: SCH 10 = 3.40 mm; SCH 40 = 7.11 mmSCH 10: Not acceptable / SCH 40: AcceptableSchedule is the commercial dimensional selection after calculation
Boundary: this is an educational workflow example. It does not include external loads, grooves/threads, bends, cyclic effects, localized corrosion, manufacturing minima, project-specific requirements or every B31.3 clause. S, E, W and Y must come from the contractual code edition.
B31.3/B36.10 boundary: the B31.3 design equation produces a required wall. After code and project allowances are applied, a commercial nominal wall is selected from ASME B36.10-2022. SCH 10 / 40 / 80 are therefore not substitutes for pressure-design calculation.
Materials and fabrication

Material, welding and heat treatment

Listed material

Applicability remains within code temperature limits, allowable stresses, notes and impact-test requirements.

Unlisted material

Requires complete published data, a justified allowable stress and compliance with all other code requirements.

WPS/PQR/WPQ

Material, thickness, diameter, process, filler, preheat and PWHT must remain within qualification ranges.

PWHT

Controls residual stress and structure; temperature and hold time depend on material, thickness and code/project rules.

Branches and joints

Reinforcement, geometry, weld quality and NDE access should be resolved before fabrication.

Traceability

Heat number, MTC, marking transfer and material control prevent mix-up.

Examination and testing

Examination is not the same as leak testing
